The project is advancing as planned across multiple fronts: permitting, technical design, by-product utilization, and sustainability goals are reinforcing one another and driving the project forward. We’ve continued active dialogue with potential customers and financiers – and received positive feedback on the project’s progress.
🌿 Environmental focus
• Baseline monitoring of surface and groundwater continues – surface water is monitored at nine points along the planned discharge route, all the way to Lake Kiantajärvi.
• Long-term behavior of mining waste is being studied through humidity chamber tests.
• In summer, we conducted supplementary nature surveys related to the conservation values of the Portinvaara Natura area.
• We are awaiting a request for additional information regarding the environmental permit application submitted in May 2025.
⚙️ Technological development
• Energy and material efficiency of the beneficiation technology was improved through early-year studies, which were tested at GTK/Mintec.
• Based on the results, we will update the preliminary design of the concentrator – aiming for significant cost efficiency.
• Technical design is also progressing in talc concentrate drying and fine grinding trials.
🧪 Magnesite – a critical mineral in focus
• Utilizing the magnesite in tailings would support the EU’s goals for critical raw material self-sufficiency – over 90% of the magnesite used in the EU is currently imported from China.
• We continue preliminary studies on how best to advance the value-creation and utilization of magnesite.
🌍 Towards sustainable mining
• Our goal is to establish sustainable and impactful practices for natural resource use and environmental responsibility.
• We will define clear sustainability targets and corresponding metrics to monitor progress.
